CHAPTER TEN
I woke early, after a restless night. I'd spent hours thinkingabout what had happened and wondered what I could do to fixit. Problemwas, it wasn't somethingI wanted to fix. I wanted Coheninmybed everynight. Wanted to feelhis bodyagainst mine and bringhim pleasure just as I had.
I made mywayto the kitchen, readyto face whatever the fallout might be. Severaltimes throughthe night, I'd thought about goingto his roomand talking about it, but I figured the wayhe left meant that he didn't want to discuss what happened.
I debated oncallingRichard to come get me, or eventakingone ofCohen's trucks, but I'd ranawaylast time and wasn't about to make the same mistake again. No, I would face this head on, and no matter what the fallout might be, I would dealwithit. I could handle Cohenrejectingthe sex, but I wasn't sure I could handle losingour friendship again.
"Morning."Cohensat at the kitchentable. He still wore the sweats and shirt he'd beeninthe night before. He didn't look as ifhe slept anybetter thanI had. He palmed a cup ofcoffee and nodded to the pot onthe counter. "Coffee's hot."
"Thanks."I reached for a cup and filled it. I leaned against the counter, blowingover mycup.
"Youhate me?"
"No."I stared at himshocked. "How could you think I would hate you?"
He shrugged. "The wayI left youlast night."
"I understand."I didn't really, but I didn't know what to say.
"I can't do this. I enjoyed what we did, what you did, but I can't…"He shook his head and stared out the window.
"That's okay. It happened. We bothenjoyed it, now we move on. I'mnot goingto force anythingon youthat you're not comfortable with."I ignored the pain that surged throughme at hearinghimonce againsayhe didn't want me.
"Canyou?"
"I can."
"I know how youfeel."
"I've felt that wayabout youfor years, Cohen. I canhandle it. I faced the fact that youweren't gayyears ago. What happened last night was amazing, and I won't sayI didn't enjoyit, but ifyoudon't want anything more, thenI candealwiththat."
"I'msorry."
I moved to the chair beside him. "Don't be. It happened. We can't undo it. We go on. Forget it happened."
He nodded and took a sip ofhis coffee.
"Do youwant me to quit comingaround?"I held mybreathas I waited for the answer.
His head shot up. "No. I don't want that."
He looked so tired. I had no doubt that he'd spent most the night thinkingabout this. "Thenlet's just forget it okay. It happened, done, and over. We are mature enoughto move on."
"I feelbad. I know youwant more."
"Cohen, yes, I'mattracted to you, but I would never force youto be someone you're not. Youare my best friend. I don't want that to change. That means more to me thansexdoes."
"Okay."He didn't sound convinced.
I sipped mycoffee. "Thenwe won't bringit up again."I smiled at him. "It's not goingto change anything. I do need to be gettinghome though. Chester is supposed to be there at tento start onthe roof. CanI borrow your phone to callRichard?"
"I cangive youa lift. I've got to pick up a few things at the feed store."He finished offhis coffee and stood to rinse the cup.
I watched him, unable to knock the feelingthat somethinghad changed betweenus.
